PORT CENTRAL SHOPPING CENTRE

Port Central shopping centre, which was constructed in 1995, is in the heart of Port Macquarie's CBD.

The shopping centre adjoins the State listed – Port Macquarie Museum and a locally listed heritage item – the Garrison building. It is in the vicinity of the State listed former Courthouse and adjoins a State listed archaeological site that is within the Glasshouse - the pre-eminent performance, arts and meeting facility in the region.

The shopping centre was a controversial development for its time as it required the closure of a section of Hay Street between William and Clarence Streets to allow for the construction of the southern and northern pedestrian entries to the complex.

The client's proposal, prepared by Woodman Architects on behalf of Gowing Bros. Ltd, was for the refurbishment to the northern entry which would be primarily constructed of concrete and steel frame with mostly light weight cladding on the northern facade.
